Frequently Asked Questions

A smart car charger has wifi connectivity to allow you to manage how much energy to give your Electric vehicle. A smart charger will also let you control the times that your car will charge. This feature will allow you to schedule charging times at off-peak rates which will reduce your cost to charge your car.

In most cases, you do not need permission to install an EV on your property. You will only need permission to install an EV charger if you live in a listed building or conservation area. If you rent your property you will also need to seek permission from your landlord before installing an EV charger.

Tethered and untethered EV chargers work the same way to charge your car. The difference between them is the cable that charges your electric car. In both cases, the cable and the connector (Type 2) that plugs into your car will be the same but for the tethered chargers, the cable is permanently attached to the charger. This can be more convenient for the user because the cable is always with the charger. Untethered chargers have a type 2 socket in which the user plugs the charging cable into both the charger and the electric vehicle when they want to charge the car.

There are many benefits to installing an EV charger at your home. The first benefit is that you can save time by charging your car overnight eliminating the need to wait at public charge stations. This also enables you to set charge times that coincide with off-peak electricity rates so you can save money on charging your car.

The second benefit is that installing an electric vehicle charger can increase your home’s value and make it more desirable to potential buyers.

The last benefit is that if paired with a solar installation you can charge your car for free using the free clean energy that you generate from your solar.

There are two types of chargers available for home charging, these are called Type 1 and Type 2 chargers.

Type 1 chargers have a 5-pin design and are always single-phase with an output between 3.7kW and 7.4kW. This rate of charge provides between 12-25 miles of range per hour of charge.

Type 2 chargers are now the standard plug type in Europe for electric vehicles. These types of chargers have a 7-pin design and can accommodate both single and three-phase mains power allowing up to 22kW of charging speeds. Type 2 cables generally provide between 30 to 90 miles of range per hour of charging. Type 2 chargers have the added benefit of a dedicated locking mechanism that only the owner of the electric vehicle will be able to unplug from the car.

There are grants available to help with the cost of installing an EV charger at your property or place of work. To qualify for the grant contribution, you must be a renter or be living in a flat with dedicated off-street parking. If either of these apply to you then you are eligible for £350 off the cost of an EV charger or up to 75% towards the cost of having an EV charger installed. To access the grant funding your EV charger installer must be OZEV-approved.

The cost to charge an electric car in the UK differs between home, work and public charging. The two factors that affect how much it will cost to charge your electric car are the size of your car’s battery and the unit price per kW of the electricity that you are using. For this example, we shall use a typical sized EV battery of 60kWh which has a range of 200 miles.

Home charging, the maximum rate UK homeowners can pay for electricity is capped at 24.5p per kWh as of April 2024. Often the rate of electricity EV car owners are paying to charge their car is much lower than this because most home charging is done at off-peak rates through the night. For this example, we will stick to the maximum rate of 24.5p per kWh which would mean the total cost to fully charge an EV at home would be around £14.40. This equates to 7p per mile.

Home Charging at off-peak rates can be as low as 10p per kWh which for the same car as the example above, the cost to charge the electric vehicle fully would be around £6. This equates to 3p per mile.

Public charging, the unit rate of electricity at public chargers averages around 48p per kWh. This means that the same car would cost around £28 to fully charge. This equates to 14p per mile.

It is perfectly safe to leave your electric vehicle charging overnight providing that you use a dedicated charge point installed by an experienced installer. The smart device connecting your EV charger to the vehicle will know how much charge is required and will stop charging once your car’s battery is fully charged.

After we have completed the initial survey of your property our engineers will arrive at your property at the time and date pre-arranged with you with a detailed plan of where your charger will go. Once the work commences the installation should take no longer than 4 hours.

Yes, it is possible to take your EV charger with you when you come to moving house. This would require you to book our engineers to come remove the EV charger from your existing property and then reinstall the charger at the new address. We would want some useful information to ensure a smooth installation at the new property such as the location where the charger will be reinstalled.
